My mother tongue is English although my father was a Welsh speaker. English has always given me a lot of pleasure. As a child, I struggled to write poems worthy of our greatest poets; as a young student I wrote magazine articles with passion and conviction and in my first job - as editor of a literary magazine, my love of language brought me into contact with Africa where I would live and work for more than 15 years. Today, I research into and write about the problems of rural development and in doing so I have travelled and worked in many countries. Amongst other things I document the experiences of country people whose stories would otherwise remain untold. Bringing people together to share knowledge and experience has meant learning to listen and understand the many different ways English is used in everyday speech. Offering people the vocabulary, images and structures they need to communicate well is one of the most satisfying things about my work. In this course we will explore new writers together, discover more about each others' interests and ideas and write about the problems and issues that affect our lives. Using English effectively is not always easy but in a group it's a challenge that is also a lot of fun!
